What is BMI (Body Mass Index)?

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple numerical measure that uses your height and weight to determine whether your weight is healthy. It was developed by Adolphe Quetelet in the 1830s and has since become the global standard used by doctors and fitness professionals to quickly assess health risks associated with body weight.

Understanding Your BMI Results

The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies BMI scores into four primary categories for adults (men and women aged 18 and older):

  • Underweight (BMI < 18.5): Being underweight can indicate malnutrition, an eating disorder, or other underlying health issues. It's recommended to consult a doctor or a nutritionist.
  • Normal Weight (BMI 18.5 โ€“ 24.9): This is the healthy, ideal range. People with a normal BMI generally have the lowest risk of weight-related health problems like heart disease and diabetes.
  • Overweight (BMI 25 โ€“ 29.9): A BMI in this range suggests that you have excess body weight for your height. Adopting a healthier diet and exercising regularly can help you get back to the normal range.
  • Obese (BMI 30 and above): Obesity significantly increases the risk of severe health conditions, including Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular diseases. Medical guidance is highly recommended.

Limitations of BMI

While BMI is a fantastic and quick screening tool, it does have some limitations. It does not measure body fat directly. Because muscle weighs more than fat, athletes and highly muscular individuals may have a high BMI (falling into the "Overweight" category) even though they have low body fat and are perfectly healthy. Similarly, elderly individuals who have lost muscle mass might have a "Normal" BMI but still carry excess unhealthy fat.

Therefore, BMI should be used as a general guide rather than a definitive diagnosis of your health.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is BMI different for men and women?

How is BMI calculated?

BMI is calculated by dividing a person's weight in kilograms by the square of their height in meters (kg/mยฒ). Our tool does this complex math for you instantly!

What is a good BMI for my age?

For most adults (aged 18-65), a healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9. For children and teenagers, BMI is calculated differently using age-specific percentiles.
